Applying to UNDERC

Eligibility (UNDERC-East)

  • Class size: 28
  • Undergraduates (preferably sophomores and juniors)
  • Research experience not necessary
  • Special consideration given to Native American and Puerto Rican students

Eligibility (UNDERC-West)

  • Class size: 8
  • Need to have participated in UNDERC-East or similar program
  • Some research experience
  • Special consideration given to Native American and Puerto Rican students
  • Interest in pursuing ecological or environmental science field research

Benefits for Both Programs

Students identify grass species at UNDERC-West

  • $3500 (East) or $4000 (West) summer stipend
  • Free tuition for 3 credits
  • Free housing
  • Transportation between Notre Dame campus and UNDERC provided
  • $500 research budget for materials and supplies

The Application

Acceptance

  • Acceptance letters sent early in December
  • Notre Dame students register for spring orientation course
  • Off-campus students participate in spring orientation course
  • Mentors for independent research projects assigned to students in April
