Students collecting data at the National Bison Range

The UNDERC-West course takes place in western Montana on the Flathead Indian Reservation. The region contains valley grasslands, montane forests, alpine meadows, as well as numerous streams and lakes with their associated riparian habitats. Wildlife is abundant including bison, elk, pronghorn antelope and deer, especially on the National Bison Range (USFWS). Much of this land is administered by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, who are partners in this program with the University of Notre Dame. Most of the coursework and independent research projects are conducted on the National Bison Range, which is Palouse Prairie.
